It’s the first of August and if you haven’t hit your local farmers’ market yet now is the time! I’ve enjoyed every minute of being home in North Carolina for a couple of weeks and one of the many highlights has been a morning trip to the state farmers’ market in Raleigh with my mom. I love our weekly market in Danville but the summer veggies in the South are something special. I can’t leave here without enjoying a good vegetable plate for dinner so we stocked up with all the fixings needed for a great meal. Fortunately, we didn’t even have to shell our own beans and peas and we tried a new variety of corn called “Devotion” that was super sweet and not too starchy. The heirloom tomatoes were so fresh and their fragrance was just what you’d expect of true vine-ripened field tomatoes. We lost a few of the super ripe tomatoes in our travel to the beach but the few that lasted were divine on sliced bread with a good heap of mayo and generous amount of salt and pepper.  Like I’ve said before, KISS (Keep is Simple, Stupid) .We rounded out our meal with some fresh made ham rolls from Ladyfingers Catering – which my son, to this day, thinks his Gigi makes from scratch. I don’t have the heart to tell him this family favorite isn’t a family recipe. We finished off our meal with Nancy Jo’s Homemade Butter Pound Cake (also found at the state farmers’ market ) topped with fresh peaches and a little vanilla ice cream. Heaven!
